Chimpanzees are very popular Great Apes which are among the creatures most similar to humans in their DNA composition, actions and the way they behave and communicate with each other. They're often also considered the most intelligent animals.
Chimpanzees are robust apes that can weigh up to 65 kilograms and they live for around fifty years. Their whole bodies are covered in fur, except for their faces, palms of their hands and feet and a few other body parts. They usually live in groups of between 30 to 150 members and their societies are male-dominated. They're terrestrial and also arboreal and can live in woodlands, grasslands or rainforests. They swing easily through trees and can walk on all fours and even upright for short periods at a time. Chimpanzees are omnivores and eat hundreds of different foods, from leaves and fruit to smaller monkeys.
Along with bonobos, chimpanzees are the closest relatives to humans. They're extremely intelligent and use tools, such as sticks and rocks, to open nuts and get food. They also use leaves as sponges to drink water. Chimpanzees are also able to learn sign language and sometimes use it to communicate with each other.
They even communicate through sound. Are among the noisiest animals there are. They communicate with different sounds. They scream, hoot and even drum on the trunks of trees for long periods of time.
There is also a great sense of solidarity between chimpanzees. They often help each other by babysitting each other’s babies. Chimpanzees have also been seen holding hands and displaying affection to each other. They sometimes even have a companion with which they spend most of their adult life.
Unfortunately, chimpanzee attacks are common in certain parts of the world. Chimpanzees live mostly in Congo and in East Africa and in certain places they attack humans on occasions. They may sometimes perceive humans as potential rivals and that'd be one of the reasons of their attacks. Chimpanzee attacks on babies are unfortunately even more common, especially in Uganda, where most of these attacks are fatal.
The most notorious chimpanzee attack is probably the attack by Travis, the monkey-actor, who attacked and seriously wounded a friend of his owner.
Intelligent and curious, chimpanzee apes are very similar to humans. They're an endangered species like most other apes and might become extinct soon if we don't take a stand to protect this wonderful creature.
