- Extended social system where a mother and her most recent
offspring travel together and adult males are predominantly
solitary
- Adult males are highly competitive with each other and
make long calls which can be heard for over half a mile
which announce their location to rival males and attract
females
- Menstrual cycle lasts approximately 30 days and females
are sexually receptive throughout their cycle
- A single infant is born after approximately 264 days
of gestation; mother and offspring will live together
up to seven years
- In the wild, sexually mature females only give birth
every 5 to 9 years, depending on the environmental conditions
and food availability
- In captivity, orangutans have lived as long as 60 years
- In optimal circumstances, wild female orangutans may
have only 4 offspring during their entire life
