The Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center, managed by the Jane Goodall Institute, was founded in the Republic of Congo in 1992. The Center is located within the Tchimpounga Natural Reserve and its mission includes protection, education, ecotourism and involvement of local populations in sustainable development. There are more than 120 confiscated or rescued chimpanzees living at the Tchimpounga Center. They live in six age-graded groups in large outdoor forest enclosures. The Tchimpounga staff is carefully considering the reintroduction of some of these chimpanzees into forests within the Congo.

Great Ape Trust provided funds for the care and protection of chimpanzees at the Tchimpounga Center. In addition, The Trust’s director of conservation, Dr. Benjamin Beck, addressed the Jane Goodall Institute’s Africa Programs in Entebbe, Uganda to share his experience and expertise in primate reintroduction.
