Great Ape Trust’s Green Team added batteries to our recycling program in 2007. We have been recycling our glass bottles, plastic bottles, metal cans, and corrugated cardboard for several years. We set back thermostats in office spaces at night, and turn off printers and monitors (as opposed to leaving them in sleep mode) to save on energy. We mow only those areas that must be kept open for safety and drainage (mowers not only consume fuel but produce unusually high levels of carbon emissions). The Trust also pays a small premium on its electricity each month as a contribution to help develop sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar power. The amount we contribute is calculated to offset the carbon emissions of our employees’ daily commuting.
