Gorilla: Closest Relative of Humans

Gorilla: Closest Relative of Humans

Gorillas are the largest species amongst all primates. They are ground dwelling chiefly herbivorous mammals inhabiting the forests of central Africa. They are placed in two species and four or five subspecies. The DNA of gorillas bears 95-99% similarity with humans and is believed to be very close to humans just after two species of chimpanzees. They are found in the tropical and subtropical forests in Africa. The Mountain Gorilla dwells in Albertine Rift montane cloud forests of the Virunga Volcanoes, ranging in altitude from 2,200-4,300 metres. The lowland gorillas inhabit the dense forests and lowland swamps. They have derived their name from a Greek word. All these three share the same family Hominidae and same ancestor that evolved around 7 million years ago. Human genome differs only 1.6% from that of the gorilla's genome. At present three species of…

Gorilla Tracking, An Overwhelming Lifetime Experience

Gorilla Tracking, An Overwhelming Lifetime Experience

The tropical rain forests are mostly impenetrable. Due to high amounts of rainfall, there is thick undergrowth that springs up continuously. Indeed very few areas in the world can claim to receive rainfall daily yet that is the norm here. It is in this thick forest where we find man's closest relative the gorilla. [embed]https://twitter.com/clarebalding/status/353033979819073536[/embed] Heavily built, with biceps that rival those of world body building champions, a fully grown mountain gorilla has no natural enemy, except man. He does not fear anything, does not tolerate intrusion, and he is firmly in charge of the family unit. Gorillas live in closely knit family units led by one dominant male. He earns his place by dethroning the in charge in vicious territorial fights that can lead to death of either animal. There are two types of gorillas, the mountain gorilla and the lowland gorilla. The mountain gorilla is huge, bigger and…

A tale of western lowland Gorillas

Western lowland gorillas are endangered, but they remain far more common than their relatives, the mountain gorillas. They live in heavy rain forests, and it is difficult for scientists to accurately estimate how many survive in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. [embed]http://www.flickr.com/photos/afrikaforce/5187404205[/embed] A new tally of lowland gorillas has found massive and surprising numbers of these African primates alive and well in the Republic of Congo, Wildlife Conservation Society scientists announced. The new census puts the number of western lowland gorillas (called great apes, along with chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans) within two adjacent areas in the northern part of the Congo at 125,000 individuals, including infant gorillas. Previous estimates from the 1980s placed the entire population of western lowland gorillas, which live in seven Central African nations, at fewer than 100,000 individuals. Since then, scientists thought the number would've at…
